Frequently Asked Questions
Will taking martial arts make my child(ren) overly aggressive?
On the contrary. When your child(ren) take Tae Kwon Do, we focus as much on discipline and control, as well as the overall philosophy of the martial art. In turn, this holistic type of instruction has actually been proven to reduce a child’s aggressive tendencies, while improving self-esteem and self-confidence.

I have a minor personal injury/limitation. Can I still take Tae Kwon Do and/or Hap Ki Do?
That depends. If you have any concerns, we always recommend you consult your physician prior to beginning the program. Each student is encouraged to develop at their own pace, and Master Lee can work with you individually on ways to work around your limitations. Often, the further a student develops in Tae Kwon Do/Hap Ki Do, the stronger and more focused they become, and the more these limitations become minimized.

How often should my child(ren) and I attend class?
You should make every effort to attend class at least twice a week, but there is no limit to how often you can attend. Also, if there is a class you’d like to attend at a location other than the one you typically attend, you may do so at no additional cost.

Where do the patches get sewn on my/my child(ren)’s do bok?
When you receive your uniform, the patches come separately, and you are responsible for sewing them on yourself. The United States flag should be sewn on so that the top of the patch is exactly one inch from the shoulder seam and centered on the outside of the right arm. Next, the Korean flag should be sewn on so that the top of the patch is exactly one inch from the shoulder seam and centered on the outside of the left arm. Third, the school patch should be sewn on, centered on the left side of the collar, approximately where a chest pocket would be located. When you receive any special patches, consult with Master Lee on where placement should be.

How do I tie my belt?
- Hold belt at its center, ends even, with stripes or your rank (if you have either) on the left side.
- Place center of belt on front center of top, at or about one inch below the naval. Wrap belt around your waist, crossing the right side over the left side at center of the back. Stripes will now be on your right side. Pull ends of belt forward and adjust so the ends are even.
- Lay the left side of belt over the front center. Lay the right side of belt across it. Stripes will now be on your left side.
- Slide the left side of belt (striped side) under and behind all the belt layers at the front center. Stripes will still be on your left side.
- Loop.
- Bring left (striped) end of belt down and over the front of the U.
- Loop striped end under and up through the U shape to form a knot.
- Pull ends of belt outward to tighten knot. Stripes will end up on your right side.
- Adjust knot so the ends of belt are even and hang neatly.
See Tying Your Belt (PDF, 373 Kb) for a visual representation of the above instructions.

How do I care for my child(ren)’s and my do bok?
Care for your do bok is easy. Obviously, the do bok needs to be treated with respect, as it is a uniform, and you/your child should minimize its wear outside of the do jhang. With this, care is easy. Please note: Even though your do bok is predominantly white (except for instructor do boks, which are black), DO NOT bleach it when you wash it! This will cause the words and patches from prematurely fading. Spot clean and then wash it in cold water. You can dry normally in a dryer with a warm setting.
